Line as an element of art

Lines can be used to do many things in art. If you're drawing an ocean the lines can show you the direction of the tides. Lines can show you the outline of all the important things in the picture. Even an absence of lines can result in a painting or picture being more free flowing. Even the picture above i feel like although it is made entirely with lines it doesn't look like its traping anything between the lines.
